Exercises to Increase Vertical – Effective and Popular Exercises to Increase Vertical Jump

If you are a basketball player then no doubt you dream about having a "Michael Jordan hang time of 2+ second" that gives one an illusion of flying through the air! All serious basket ball players want to know the secret of "dunking" better. The fact remains that one has to first understand one's body – like body weight has almost 50% muscle tissue, and out of the three groups of muscle (cardiac, skeletal and smooth) it is the skeletal muscles that help us to move, and other Facts.

Like ballet dancers, basketball players also need to be flexible to dunk well. Stretching exercises that have been drilled into you by your coach are not "sissy" or "useless". In fact, they are found to help effectively in bringing about a dramatic increase in "vertical leap / jump" by a few inches.

Stretching after a warm up is essential. Stretch your calves by placing both hands on a pole. Put one foot 24 inches behind the other and lean in a direction direction till you can feel your calves stretching. Hold that position for a few minutes. The Achilles tendon in your foot can also be stretched by bending your knee of your leg that you keep at the back during a stretch. Toe touches should be done till it begins to hurt. Another effective stretch is to hold the pole and at the same time grab a leg behind and hold it till you feel the effects on the top portion of your leg. After this, you should lie down on your back pulling your leg towards your chest and hold it in that position to stretch your lower back. Repeat this exercise with both legs.

Do regular jumping exercises by trying to touch the basketball hoop with a jump / running jump. Aim to touch the backboard. Keep pushing yourself to jump higher and higher – going from the backboard to the rim of the hoop etc. Consistent jumping will make you jump higher in no time.

Never forgetting that quality is more important than quantity, make sure that you train accordingly. To get maximum height you will have to give your very best in doing the proper exercises to increase vertical jumps . Your vertical is bound to improve if you earnestly try for more distance every time you jump.

Rest for about two minutes between each set of exercises and do not workout for more than an hour every day. It is important that you progress with weights as much as it is possible because if your body muscles are satisfied and do not think they have to get stronger, then your vertical will not get any higher either! Always keep in mind that overtraining could cause damage to your joints and even bring on early arthritis, and you do not want that. Keep a record of your reps, exercises, sets and weights that you use for each exercise so that you know how much to increase in a regular manner.

1950S in Popular Culture: Beatniks, Elvis and Polka Dot Skirts

The 1950s was an interesting decade, jammed between another World War and a new, threatening age of nuclear power and atomic energy. This period saw the roots sewn for the carefree generation of the 60s, as the ‘Beat generation’ saw no hope and thus began to rebel against social conventions.

The classic musical Grease sums up many of the stereotypical fashions, lifestyles and attitudes of the 50s. Young men dressed in leather jackets, slicked back their hair with a comb they kept in their top pocket, and called girls “dolls” and “baby”. Rock ‘n’ roll was born, with Elvis Presley one of the main protagonists. His characteristic dancing is still parodied to this day.

Other big names on the rock ‘n’ roll music scene include Buddy Holly, famous for his thick-rimmed ‘nerd glasses’, Chuck Berry, and Johnny Cash.

In film, European cinema enjoyed a renaissance as resources were again available. Because of television’s threat, producers sought new and innovative ways of driving audiences back into cinemas. Big production and spectacle films gained popularity, with titles like ‘The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men’, ‘The Ten Commandments’ and ‘The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad’. The 50s were labelled a golden era for 3D cinema – will today’s latest reincarnation of this technology live up to this?

Japanese cinema also reached its zenith during this period, with notable directors including Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi.

Beatniks & polka dot skirts

The fifties also saw the ‘return of fashion’, following the lifting of the austere measures enforced during World War II. Many Paris fashion houses re-opened and there was a flood of synthetic fabrics and easy-care processes; drip-dry nylon, orlon and dacron became immensely popular, while acrylic, polyester and spandex were also all introduced in the 50s.

‘Teddy Boys’ wore an exaggerated version of Edwardian fashion, sporting skinny ties and narrow trousers revealing garish socks. In the States the ‘Greasers’ were the nearest equivalent, rebelling in a similar way against the styles of their parents.

In fact, as usual the USA was highly influential in popular culture, with the idea of the ‘Beat Generation’ introduced by author Jack Kerouac. The ‘beatniks’ were an underground, non-conformist youth gathering that sprung up in New York. A typical look included a beret, pair of sunglasses and black turtleneck sweater. Jeans and leather jackets were also popular.

For women specifically, hair was often worn short and curled in a ‘New York look’. Hats were essential for all but the most casual occasions. Later in the decade the curly ‘poodle cut’, the ‘bouffant’ and the ‘beehive’ came into fashion, made famous today by Marge Simpson and Amy Winehouse. Beat girls obviously wore their hair long and straight; the direct opposite of these styles.

Ever increasing factory production made the 50s an era of mass-produced clothing and standardised sizes. The ‘ready to wear’ industry was born. Ladies wore very feminine styles, with bows, flounces and frills. Halterneck and strapless dresses were a big trend, and skirts were very full, often accompanied by petticoats to give extra body.

Still, nothing says 1950s more than a circle skirt. These were worn by the younger generation (as ‘teenagers’ were now established as a sort of mainstream subculture), always on top of petticoat underskirts. They were often homemade, and while they featured a range of designs, poodle skirts and polka dot skirts are the most iconic.

Review on the First Episode of Gene Simmon's Family Jewels

A & E is the place to watch the latest version of the family reality show genre started by the Osbournes on MTV. However, there are a few major differences between Gene Simmon's Family Jewels, and the Osbournes, the zany British family led by rocker Ozzy Osbourne and boisterous wife Sharon. The Osbournes enjoyed such a huge audience mainly because the viewers really felt like they were getting a true, fly-on-the-wall view of one of rock's first families. Ozzy, Sharon, Jack and Kelly really never came across as actors; They did not need to. Their own reality was so completely odd and unpredictable that watching paint dry in the Osbourne household was a privilege. However, Kiss frontman Gene "The Tongue" Simmons comes across as the lead actor in a show where his family looks to him to identify their individual roles, especially Simmons' common-law wife, Shannon Tweed, who was once Playboy Playmate of the year . In the premiere episode we see Shannon trying to one up Gene, who announces (to the cameras) that he is planning a surprise party for her birthday. The kids respond to his announcement in a predictable fashion – with disbelief. How on Earth would daddy Gene, which clueless approach to the real world (we see him bathing the family dog by throwing the dog into the pool and struggling to run a dishwasher), know the very basics of party planning? Also, given the theme of the first episode – that Gene is truly the King of his manse, to what all must defer – would Gene be unselfish enough to give his time and energy to his common-law wife?

Gene and Shannon have been together for 23 years, and remain (in Gene's view) "happily unmarried." We learn quickly that Gene's reluctance to commit to the woman who has borne both of the couple's children is a source of amusement to the two teenagers, Nick and Sophie, and a source of distress to Shannon. But, does Gene care? Not if you believe what you see at the outside of the episode. Gene says to the camera "Marriage is an institution. You also have to be committed to it. Shannon's answer to Gene's unique attitude is "If someone does not marry you after 23 years, it means you're a loser." Could you imagine Sharon Osbourne being so self-effacing? Are you kidding – Sharon was the ultimate matriarch! Shannon's own teenage son even chimes in to support his wayward father. "It's good being a bachelor," he says laughing. Sad. Another future divorcee or serial monogamist in the making, compliments of Gene Simmons.

Gene then takes the cameras along for an all out bachelor night in Vegas. Just for the heck of it, he leaves his family and goes to Hooters. The girls are draped all over Gene, seeing a human cash register because there is not much else to look at. We see the Alpha male at his coolest – driving the bubbleheads around in a limousine all the while spouting out pathetic lines such as, "I believe that I should have as many women as possible and I believe you should have as many women as possible. " Please. I am humilated for him, and for his whole family who support his delusional reality in which he is front and center. When Gene appears at home, Shannon asks how Vegas was. His reply? "There were lots of boobs and they were all bouncing into each other." Yawn. At the end of the day, Shannon pulls a big ol 'staged surprise on Gene and plans an ambush wedding. I'm too bored to even write another word about it, but if you're worried, Gene is still the man, the myth and the unmarried legend. In his own eyes, at least.

The Popular Artificial Silver Tip Christmas Tree

The silver tip is a very popular Christmas tree choice in the Pacific Northwest. This hardy, high elevation member of the fir family is treasured for the uniformity of its branches and overall pleasing appearance. However, the range at which these trees can be grown is quite limited and they can take more than a decade to mature. This absolutely means higher costs at the tree stand, particularly if you live far from the Northwest, the primary habitat of these trees. Purchasing an artificial silver tip Christmas tree is a cost-effective way to incorporate these majestic trees into your xmas celebrations. The price of an artificial silver tip Christmas tree is comparable to that of a fresh cut one, and has no shedding needles, watering requirements, and can be used year after year.

An artificial silver tip Christmas tree is an ideal component in a traditional family Christmas celebration. Multicolored bulbs, shiny tinsel, and handcrafted ornaments all complement the stylistically nature of this tree. The fact that you do not have to throw it out and buy a new one next year is simply a bonus.

Of course, no matter how lovely the tree, the final arbiter of holiday ambience is the tree decorator. Strings of multicolored lights, individual handcrafted holiday heirlooms, as well as the traditional candy canes and tinsel are the elements that truly make a holiday celebration special. The internet is a treasure of knowledge, and the aspiring holiday designer can find a plethora of tips on decorating xmas trees using search engines.

What Is a Charm Bracelet?

Charm bracelets have been around for thousands of years, but the trend for wearing them has changed and developed dramatically during this time.

For instance, one of the most iconic images of a charm bracelet is that of famed jeweller Tiffany and Co, who introduced their first charm bracelet in 1889. This was a silver link bracelet with just one charm, a dangling heart. This heart charm has since gone on to become something of a trademark for Tiffany’s.

Charm bracelets and the wearing of charms dates back as far as 600 BC with materials such as clay and bone being used. It is also thought that back then charms were worn as a sort of talisman to represent good luck and fight off evil spirits.

The meaning and functionality of charm bracelets has also changed with time. In wartime, soldiers would bring home charms as a form of trinket for their loved ones, something made by a local craftsman that could be kept and worn as a memento of the place in which the soldier saw action. The 1950s saw these bracelets popularised by children, who would collect charms to represent different events and special occasions that occurred as they were growing up.

However, the latest incarnation of charm bracelets have been largely created in Europe, particularly Denmark where the brand Trollbeads led the resurgence during the seventies. These charm bracelets were of a modular design, meaning that charms were built to fit a particular threaded system employed by that make. For example, Pandora, another Danish jeweller and currently the market leader with over 900 different types of charms, uses a patented system which means their charms will not fit on other bracelets. These systems also ensure that charms fit securely onto their intended bracelet, where they can be added and removed with ease.

In addition, many charm companies include optional spacers or clips, which are a form of smaller charm that remain in a fixed position on the bracelet as a way of sectioning off charms and stopping them from sliding around the bracelet. Other brands that use threading systems in their bracelet design include Lovelinks by Aagaard, Chamilia and Links of London.

Despite Europe leading the charge when it comes to manufacturing these charm systems, they have also proved to be hugely popular in North America. The main draw of these more modern charm systems is the versatility they offer. Bracelets are still available as chain links, and these can take a limited number of dangling charms. However, more common are the solid bracelets which charms can be twisted onto. The bracelets are typically available in polished silver, oxidised silver, gold and sometimes leather.

Likewise the charms are crafted from a number of different materials and this, along with their design can affect the price greatly. Typically charms, or beads as they are sometimes referred to, are made from sterling silver, but are also available with enamel detail, semi-precious stones and gemstones, 14k gold and even wood.

Why Is Pool More Popular Than Snooker?

Pool and snooker are two very similar games. They both involve using pool cues to pocket different colored billiard balls on the table. Both require different billiard supplies, are two player games that involve the calling of foul shots and require skill in aim and focus. Yet, they are entirely different when it comes down to the details.

Snooker is a thoughtful, slow moving game that requires patience. One frame can go on for an average of one hour. The table is much bigger than the pool table – two meters wide and one meter in length. Because of the size of the table, break building (i.e. an unbroken series of pocketing the shots) is very difficult. It requires a great amount of planning. Snooker players need to be experts at using the spin on the billiard balls so that they can play the shot in such a manner that they end up positioning the cue ball for the next shot. The billiard balls are usually hit smoothly and not whacked across the table. Scoring is on the basis of the balls, each of which has a different value.

Pool tables, on the other hand, are smaller – a meter in length and less than a meter wide. The pockets are larger and the pool table felt used is much coarser (and hence requires more force while playing). Here the rules are less strict and the pace is quicker. It also doesn’t need devices like the spider, which allows for shots that are too far to be reached by an average human. There is no scoring as such; the person who finishes and pots the black ball first wins.

In a friendly non-competitive environment, it’s easy to see why pool has become more popular than snooker. For one, snooker takes much longer to play than pool. Two good pool players can clean up a pool table in 5-10 minutes. That’s not the case with snooker.

Snooker is also more difficult and hence never caught up in terms of popularity with the general players. In terms of excitement, pool also gets an upper edge here. Because of the duration of the game, players tend to enjoy playing it much more. Pool also makes for a good spectator sport due to this reason.

Pool parlors and bars also have a big role to play in this. At various times, pool parlors have sprung up in various places all across the world. They proved to be profitable businesses for entrepreneurs and people frequented these places as it had a fun sport involved in the social process. Remember: pool was originally a betting game, and got its name because players and gamblers ‘pooled’ their money on the table.

Ultimately, both games have their pros and cons in their own respective fields. Yet, it’s clear to see why pool has gained popularity.

Fans Say Farewell To Popular Radio Station That Is Changing Formats

Several friends and I were discussing the demise of our favorite local radio station, which has been sold to a Christian broadcasting company. We will miss the eclectic mix of alternative rock, pop, and folk on the station, and we began to wonder what would be an appropriate last song to play before the change in format.

Here are ten tracks, all from bands who were often heard on the station, that would serve as a fitting coda.

One More Last Song by Kaiser Chiefs

This indie rock tune from Education, Education, Education and War epitomizes the station’s dedication to alternative acts.

Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now by the Smiths

Morrissey’s band, born about the same time as the station, has always been a favorite artist on it. The title sums up how many of us will feel after that final song is played.

Losing My Religion by REM

Some folks rely on spirituality for comfort, but many supporters of the station turn to the radio for that very reason. This title also makes sense in that a Bible company bought the station and will begin airing a Christian format in April.

Where Will You Go? by the Minus Five

This title from Down With Wilco is the question many of us fans are asking right now, for the radio choices in our city are rather narrow.

Up the Junction by Squeeze

Lyricist Chris Difford took this Cool For Cats title from a common British phrase for being in a troubled situation without much hope.

Troubled Times by Fountains of Wayne

Before “Stacy’s Mom” became a huge hit for this New England indie rock quartet, our station had several tracks from their first two albums in heavy rotation.

No Sunlight by Death Cab For Cutie

Ben Gibbard and all of his projects remained favorites of the disc jockeys, who will unfortunately be no longer a bright spot on the radio dial.

You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go by Bob Dylan

In dark times there is no better record to play than Blood On the Tracks, which features this poignant heartbreaker.

1985 by the Minor Leagues

Ben Walpole’s band fills two characteristics of the station, in that they are a local band as well as an indie rock act.

Not the Same by Ben Folds

The oldies station plays “Brick” occasionally, but it was our station that brought us dozens of other tracks by the guy who recorded “Rockin’ the Suburbs.”

Whatever serves as the last song, as soon as it ends we agreed that we will all need to find a different station for the preset 1 button on our dashboard radios.

A Day for Mothers

Mother's day is commonly celebrated during the second day of May. It is a world tradition which is done to honor mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds and the importance of mothers in the society in every part of the world. This celebration is renamed as an important day for every family; It is significant time of the year when mothers feel important and cherished. Although it is celebrated in different dates the essence of the day is more important than the date.

Back in 1912, Anna Jarvis branded the phrases "second Sunday of May" and "mother's day", and also created the Mother's day International Association. The apostrophe in the term "Mother's day" is specifically place in between the letters "R" and "S" which denotes a singular possessive term for each family and for their mother alone and not all the mothers around the world. In countries like the United States, Philippines, Brazil and other countries, This is celebrated in the month of May, specifically during the second Sunday. While in some Arab countries, it is celebrated in the month of March. In Roman Catholic churches, mother's day is associated with the devotion to Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. During mother's day a special prayer service is done in her honor.

Gifts such as cards and flowers are often given to mothers by their family and friends. These simple gifts symbolize their respect and love for their mothers who have dedicated her life for her family. Just for one day, mothers around the world are given importance and if permitted by the government, this kind of celebration could have a special holiday which allows family to celebrate it outside their homes.

Aside from birthdays, mother's day is one of those days when mothers feel special and appreciated. It is a reminder of how important it is for women and mothers to be treated with respect respect and love for they have been a big part of a family. In fact, they are the reason why families are established and started. Mothers take the major role in starting a family. They are the fruit bearer and the mediator of the family. That is why mothers should not be taken for granted for they have contributed a great deal in our society. And for mothers, take this opportunity when you will feel loved and cherished for it is only once a year. You should take advantage of it and celebrate it with your family.
