The Different Types of Charm Bracelets You Can Buy

There is undoubtedly a growing trend towards charm bracelets. This once popular form of memento has taken on a new lease of life thanks to designer brands taking hold of the concept and re-marketing it as a sleek fashion statement.

There are many different styles of charm bracelets out there, but the main kind on offer appears to be a silver snake chain. This bracelet allows for a large number of charms to slide onto it. The original form of these bracelets tended to be made of silver or gold links and charms could be clipped onto each link. The new style of bracelet, however, offers a more secure form of fastening charms to the bracelet. Instead of clipping the charms onto the chain links, you slide charms onto the bracelet via the hole they have in the middle of them. In addition, brands such as Pandora use threaded charms. These threads are on the inside of the hole that runs through the centre of the charm. This means that you screw the charm onto the bracelet which can help keep it secure.

Bracelet Clasps

Not only are the charms more securely fastened to the bracelets nowadays, but the bracelets themselves have several different kinds of clasp. Lobster clasps are probably the most common. These are quite standard for bracelets and feature a trigger opening which is very easy to use. However, because of the ease of the clasp opening, many charm manufacturers also sell safety chains for their bracelets. These provide additional security to keep the bracelet fastened should the lobster clasp spring open. Other companies employ their own special clasps such as the Pandora locking clasp. This style of clasp opens like a clam shell and is incredibly tight and therefore difficult to prise apart. Depending on what brand of charm bracelet you buy, you can even choose a clasp made with a different finish to that of the main body of the bracelet. For instance, it is possible to buy sterling silver bracelets with gold clasps.

Bracelet Types

Charm bracelets are also becoming available in a wide variety of different materials. While the unbranded varieties are usually available in sterling silver, bigger brands such as Trollbeads and Links of London also sell charm bracelets made of 18ct gold, dyed leather and even string. Silver bracelets can often be purchased with a highly polished or matte finish and there are even oxidised silver bracelets available. These bracelets have an almost black appearance due to the oxidation process.

Choosing Your Size

The final point to be said about charm bracelets is to make sure you get the right size. Remember that your bracelet has to be able to fit a number of charms on it and so you don’t want it to be too tight against your wrist before you begin. To find out what size charm bracelet to buy you should measure your wrist with a measuring tape or bit of string. Once you have this measurement add between 2 and 3cm to the length. As you start adding charms to your bracelet they will help make the bracelet feel tighter. However, you should bear in mind that snake chain bracelets can expand up to 1cm under the weight of the charms. Bracelets made from natural materials such as leather and string will stretch even more over time.
